General Description:
The Social Media Specialist is part of the Communications and Marketing team within the Office of External Affairs at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.The position serves as a multi-platform content writer to support, manage and develop the school’s online presence through social and other new media. This includes the day-to-day management of various digital channels and their communities.This position works under the direction of the Digital Media Manager on the Media & Public Relations group within the Communication and Marketing team. This position also functions in collaboration with colleagues in content strategy, marketing, graphic design and branding, website design, alumni relations and development/fundraising roles.
OFFICE AND BLOOMBERG SCHOOL OVERVIEW:
The Office of External Affairs includes Development, Communications and Marketing, and Finance and Administration.The award winning Communications and Marketing team provides strategic communications, external and internal communications, and marketing services for the School across a variety of digital and print platforms. This includes brand and identity management, digital strategies and web services, editorial and content strategies, visual communication, media and public relations, social media and integrated marketing campaigns.The School celebrated its Centennial year in 2016 and is currently in the University’s Rising to the Challenge Campaign. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working closely with the Digital Media Manager, the Social Media Specialist will: Manage and develop written and visual content for the Bloomberg School’s primary social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, and more.
Assist with the implementation and development of paid marketing campaigns on Facebook and other social networks. Develop campaigns and brainstorm engaging content for diverse audiences reached by the Bloomberg School including but not limited to: prospective and current students, alumni, donors, faculty, staff, media, affiliated and unaffiliated friends, advocates, sponsors, partners and supporters of the School and public health overall.
Work with communications staff throughout the Bloomberg School as well as other Johns Hopkins University and Medicine divisions to generate content for social media, and also to assist with paid marketing efforts. Work with student groups and the Bloomberg School admissions team to develop social media content representative of Bloomberg School student experience.
Track and analyze campaign and post efficacy to ensure goals are met, and that social media activities are clearly linked to desired outcomes. Develop custom and standard reports as needed for use in meetings, proposals, etc.
Monitor public mentions of the Bloomberg School across social media. Evaluate emerging social media channels and envision ways the Bloomberg School could use them effectively, paying close attention to experiential and video-based technologies as they emerge. Assist in maintaining and annually updating the Bloomberg School’s social media guidelines, as well as the ongoing task of educating Bloomberg School communications staff about the guidelines.
Assist with crisis communications as needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in fine arts, graphic design, computer science or other related field.
Two years related experience. Demonstrated personal or professional experience with managing written and visual content for related mediums and platforms. This may include collegiate or internship experiences.
Creative, dynamic thinker with strong, professional writing and editing skills. An aptitude for visual communication and graphic design. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
DEGREE OF INDEPENDENT ACTION PERFORMED ON THE JOB:
This position works independently and is ideal for a self-starter seeking increasing responsibility and accountability. The position works proactively with other team members, identifying resources and approaches to achieving job goals and outcomes. Under the guidance of the the Digital Media Manager, the Social Media Specialist is responsible for managing his or her daily work and responsibilities as well as moving forward short- and long-term goals in a timely manner.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS REQUIRED AS PART OF THE JOB:
This position works closely with internal communications staff in various departments, centers, and other diviisions within the School and the University. The role will also require occasional work with strategic partners, collaborators and alliances for specific public health-related campaigns.
SPECIFIC SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Demonstrated experience with developing or managing multimedia content a plus. A desire and experience to work independently as well as on a collaborative team. Ability to reach out to internal and external audiences and stakeholders is important for building social media networks and communities, including comfort in public presentations.
Motivated self-starter who can identify and bring social media and trends to the goals of the office and Bloomberg School organization. A passion for public health issues and experience. Proficiency with social media measurement tools such as Hootsuite and Facebook Insights is a plus but not required.
Given the public nature of the channels and immediacy of impact within the digital environment a strong sense of professional judgement is critical for success. Proficiency with tools such as Google Analytics and Google Adwords is a plus but not required. Proficiency with photo and video editing software such as Adobe Creative Suite is a plus but not required.
Fluency in another language a plus as we look to grow social media channels globally

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
