The Program Advisor for Diversity and Inclusion Programs is a generalist position that coordinates and implements diversity and inclusion programs for all students on campus.  The position is a partnership between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs and  works to enhance the learning experience of all students on campus about the needs, history, and work of diverse populations in order to create a more inclusive environment at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh and better prepare students for a more global workforce in the future.  This position also works to assist traditionally underrepresented students and student organizations with a mission involving diversity and social justice.  This position directly advises the University Speaker Series and Social Justice Club.  This Program Advisor is expected to provide advisement and guidance in the area of event planning and implementation, leadership training and development and managing financial needs. 

This position facilitates educational and developmental leadership opportunities with a mission to enhance the students’ overall experience and increase the retention, progression, and graduation rates for the institution. This position demonstrates an active, intentional and ongoing engagement with all aspects of diversity – in all people, projects and communities; recognizes, understands and appreciates the different ways in which others express themselves, various lifestyles, cultures, backgrounds and all unique differences; treats others with dignity, respect and consideration; works to create work environments that are experienced as safe by all; is curious about and open to others’ ideas.  The Student Leadership and Involvement area utilizes an advising approach that encourages student learning and supports/maximizes personal growth. Its members will be involved in the implementation of the campus inclusive excellence plans and partner with the Center for Academic Support of Inclusive Excellence.  This position reports to the Assistant Director for Student Involvement.  Work hours will include late nights and weekends. 

1.     Programming/Training (45% of time)

  • Coordinate/Participate in the planning process of office programs and events designed to advance the University’s mission by promoting educational and co-curricular learning in the areas of diversity, multiculturalism and inclusion.
  • Implement programs that develop awareness of others cultures, beliefs, and practices which contribute to positive communication on issues of gender, race, religion, gender identity and expression, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, ability, socioeconomic status, etc.
  • Identify programmatic ties to academic programs at the institution.  Partner with faculty in these programs to develop these initiatives as opportunities to enhance the in-class learning experience.
  • Provide diversity and inclusion education and training workshops for students.
  • Serve as a presenter or collaborator for campus-wide diversity and leadership training initiatives such as SAFE Training, Bystander Intervention Training, and Start Smart Salary Negotiation.
  • Responsible for building alliances and collaborating with students, academic departments, alumni and the Oshkosh community to initiate and promote collaborative programs and events.  Past partnerships have included the LGBTQ Studies Program, Social Justice Program, Women and Gender Studies Program, etc.
  • Advise an Alternative Break trip focused on the topic of diversity and inclusion.
  1. Oversee the creation and implementation of a pre- and post-trip curriculum related to the educational components of the trip.
  2. Work to recruit students for this opportunity that may be able to connect trip experiences with their academic programs of study.
  • Assist Reeve Union staff efforts in diversity education and training for student employees and full-time staff.

2.     Advising (30% of time)

  • Maintain a presence within student organizations focused on diversity and social justice.
  • University Speaker Series
    • Work with the Speaker Series Leadership Team to develop and implement and effective campus wide approach to speakers and educational programming.  This includes but is not limited to planning retreats, conducting leadership team evaluations, programming workshops, budget development and management, speaker selection, implementation, evaluation, contracting, marketing and promotion.
    • Work with members to collaborate and obtain input from other key student organizations/partners.  
    • Specifically market speakers to academic departments where topics may directly connect to a student’s in-class area of focus.
    • Provide academic, leadership, and social advisement to executive board members through 1:1 and small group meetings.  Help students identify skills that they have gained which may combine with their academic experience to make them more marketable as potential employees in the future.
  • Social Justice Club
    • With the faculty of the Social Justice minor program, serve as the co-advisor for the Social Justice Club, assisting students on student organization management and identifying collaboration opportunities with campus and community programs and initiatives.
    • Provide academic, leadership, and social advisement to executive board members through 1:1 and small group meetings.  Help students identify skills that they have gained which may combine with their academic experience to make them more marketable as potential employees in the future.
  • Interfraternity Council Judicial Board and the Panhellenic Council Judicial Board
    • In collaboration with the Program Advisor for Fraternity and Sorority Life and the Dean of Students Office, serve as the advisor to the IFC and PHC Judicial Boards, ensuring that both groups follow constitutional protocols and University policies.
    • Provide academic, leadership, and social advisement to panel members through 1:1 and small group meetings.  Help students identify skills that they have gained which may combine with their academic experience to make them more marketable as potential employees in the future.
3.     Advocacy (20% of time)
  • Serve as a campus advocate for a wide array of historically underrepresented students and groups, including students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, women, veterans, students with disabilities, students who identify as being LGBTQ+, international students, and other underrepresented populations.
  • Serve on campus-wide coalitions, committees, and councils to represent the department and advocate for underrepresented populations.   Past committees have included College of Letters and Science’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusive Climate Committee; Interfaith Dialogue Education Alliance; Harvey Milk Commemorative Dinner; and World AIDS Day.
  • Serve as a member of the Student Affairs Inclusive Excellence Committee.

4.     Other (5% of time)

  • Collaborate with other Student Leadership & Involvement and Reeve Union colleagues on departmental initiatives.
  • Serve as a positive team member, supporting and assisting at other Student Leadership & Involvement events and activities as necessary.
  • Supervise paid and unpaid undergraduate and graduate student employees and interns.  Provide opportunities that both enhance the overall program for the department as well as their individual student and academic experiences.
  • Maintain and follow all University and departmental budgeting and financial expectations and guidelines.
  • Facilitate programs as requested by the Assistant Director, and assist the Student Leadership and Involvement staff in various leadership training programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director.

Salary

Terms of Appointment

Renewable, annual (12 month) contract with 1.0 FTE.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree and one (1) or more years of part-time experience in student activities on a college campus (or equivalent experience).
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • knowledge of student development theory;
  • minimum of 2 years part-time, direct experience of diversity and inclusion programming and advocacy;
  • experience advising students as well as presenting and facilitating;
  • experience working on campus (or equivalent experience) with underrepresented populations;
  • working knowledge of basic budget and financial management;
    • demonstrated experience working with diverse populations and commitment to inclusivity.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in higher education, college student personnel administration, counseling, leadership, or related field, and two (2) or more years experience in student activities on college campus (or equivalent experience);
  • experience working in a college union or a higher education diversity role;
  • experience advising students and advocating for students and underrepresented student groups;
  • experience collaborating with other departments in development of programs;
  • experience with contracting of professional performers;
