Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department Chair - University of Alabama in Huntsville - Huntsville, AL

Description

Title: Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department Chair
About the University: The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), classified as a “high research” active institution, offers academic and research programs in the Colleges of Engineering, Education, Nursing, Business Administration, Science, and Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences. Huntsville maintains one of the highest per capita incomes and standards of living in the Southeast. It is a national center of aerospace and high technology research. The Huntsville area is also home to more than 50 Fortune 500 companies, the Hudson Alpha Institute for Biotechnology, and several federal research facilities, including NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, and the Army’s Missile Defense Agency, Materiel Command, Aviation and Missile Command, and Space and Missile Defense Command.
ABOUT THE COLLEGE: The College of Engineering currently has a research focus that addresses three National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Grand Challenge problems: secure cyberspace; restore and improve urban infrastructure; and engineer tools of scientific discovery. In addition, COE has made recent investments in energy storage and systems engineering. The College of Engineering and the CEE department are expected to play an important role in several UAH research thrust areas including earth, atmospheric, and space systems. Roughly 33% of UAH’s undergraduate students are enrolled in the College’s eight ABET-accredited programs in aerospace, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, industrial and systems, mechanical, and optical engineering.
About the Department: The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department is a relatively small department in the College of Engineering. It has three tenured and tenure track faculty, one clinical faculty member, and one full-time lecturer. UAH-CEE research strengths include: transportation, traffic modeling, urban planning, structural engineering and hazard mitigation, steel and self-centering structures, advanced infrastructure materials, advanced water/wastewater treatment, water reuse, decentralized treatment, and non-point source pollution control. The department possesses laboratories and combined research/instructional facilities in the areas of transportation, structures, and water treatment, which includes ~ 6000 square feet of high-bay space housing CE materials, structural hazard mitigation, and hydraulics laboratories; four environmental and water quality laboratories, one transportation and GIS laboratory, and one geotechnical laboratory; and a Real Time Instruction for Driver Education (RIDE) facility. The CEE Department offers the BS (ABET accredited) and MSE degree programs in Civil Engineering, and participates in a joint PhD degree program in Civil Engineering with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Nine UAB members of the civil engineering faculty serve as adjunct faculty at UAH and serve on Civil Engineering PhD dissertation committees. Currently, the CEE department has about 151 undergraduate and 24 graduate students.
