The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is recruiting for a full time, Simulation Educator for the Center for Innovation in Pharmacy Simulation. This Center resides in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy (www.pharmacy.unc.edu), one of 5 health science schools (Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, Public Health, and Medicine) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill is located near the prestigious Research Triangle Park of North Carolina and faculty members have a strong history of collaboration with external industry and government partners.
The Center for Innovation in Pharmacy Simulation (CIPS) is tasked with developing a state-of-the-art, data-driven simulation platform in support of all major missions of the School. Missions include all phases of education and pharmaceutical research including medication discovery, delivery optimization, assessment, and practice. The Center also will assist with developing clinical skills in Pharmacy students using standardized patients and the CAE Learning Space clinical skills testing system http://ift.tt/2ddhaGi.
This position will report to the Center Director and requires a number of curricular development, personal and organizational skills. Our Simulation Center conducts healthcare training sessions using standardized patients and in the future we will use computer based and virtual reality simulation training. The Simulation Educator serves as a content creator and facilitator/instructor for all simulation-based training and assessment activities conducted in the Center. This position will work primarily with clinical and academic content experts to write detailed learning objectives and then fully develop simulation case scenarios, including assessment strategies for use with standardized patients. This position will also support objective structured clinical examinations for the purpose of skill assessment in the Doctor of Pharmacy degree program at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. This position will facilitate simulation sessions in the Center to include scheduling standardized patients, preparing them prior to interaction with students and being physically present in the Center during all training sessions. Please note: This is not a teaching position.
Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities
35% Simulation Content Creation and Implementation
  • Coordinate with faculty and other departments at the university on scheduling content creation deliverables and timelines
  • Partner with and support content experts in the development of simulation curricula
  • Work with faculty to create clinical encounter exam content to be used on the CAE system
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to extract required usage analytics
  • Assist faculty and staff with report generation for assessment of student performance
  • Assist faculty with the release of specific, time-stamped, student video encounters showing their performance
  • Work with course directors to adjust scores in the CAE system as needed to provide accurate scoring for clinical encounters
  • Enter grades from CAE in Sakai, the course management system for the university
  • Archive student performance
  • Generate reports as needed
  • Contribute to the scholarship missions of the School related to data extraction from the CAE system
  • Assist course instructors in completing needs assessments
  • Write accurate learning objectives
  • Work with content experts to develop case scenarios
  • Assist faculty researchers with the identification and pursuit of grant/partnership funding opportunities related to simulation-based learning, learner assessment and patient safety
 
20% Application Management
  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) of the CAE Learning Space System at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy
  • Participate in industry trade shows, collaborate with the School of Medicine, and attend other events to learn best practices for use of the system
  • Develop and maintain training module resources for synchronous and asynchronous training
  • Train CAE Learning Space functionality to faculty, students, staff, and other departments at the university
  • Perform and test system updates as needed in coordination with the School of Medicine.
 
15% Simulation Operations Management
  • The Simulation Educator will provide technical and instructional support to customers of the Simulation Center
  • Manage user accounts, backups and credentialing
  • Collaborate with faculty to set user account permissions
  • Coordinate with faculty and staff to schedule encounters in the CAE system
  • Serve as primary operation and management of CAE Learning Space System at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy during clinical examinations. Must be on site for usage periods.
  • Operate system to identify and resolve technical problems before heavy usage periods
  • Work with faculty to find unique solutions to exam-related logistical and technical problems
  • Provide summaries of operational expenses, class attendance, equipment usage and equipment repair as input to monthly, quarterly and or annual plan development
  • Conduct tours of the facility
 
10% Standardized Patient Coordinator
  • Collaborate with School of Medicine and Human Resources to identify, recruit, and hire standardized patient actors
  • Schedule standardized patient actors for clinical encounters
  • Schedule standardized patient actors for training sessions
  • Collaborate with faculty to deliver standardized training sessions with standardized patient actors
  • Serve as alternate standardized patient actor during clinical encounters as needed
 
20% Computer, Web and A/V Technical Support
  • Serve as liaison between UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and other simulation centers on campus, both in Chapel Hill and Asheville
  • Anticipate and resolve potential technology problems
  • Coordinate with vendors to support and resolve all on site problems via work order tracking
  • Collaborate with Educational and Information Technology units and other departments at the university in solving technology problems
  • Support all exam rooms including equipment testing, troubleshooting and replacement
  • Collaborate with faculty and students to support video reviewing technology in collaboration with the Information Techology unit at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy
  • Performs other duties as directed or assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning tasks that are logically related
 
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Previous experience in healthcare simulation training
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently with frequent interruptions
 
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to consulting or developing course content, curriculum, instructional technique/technology, distance education design, development or implementation, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Project management experience
  • Formal training in instructional design, educational theory, and previous academic teaching experience
  • Prior clinical medical experience
  • Knowledge of the CAE Learning Space System and Certified Healthcare Simulation Education (CHSE)
