Librarian, Associate Dean for Collections - University of South Carolina - Columbia, SC

Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Associate Dean for Collections provides transformational vision and leadership for developing the collections of University Libraries, including oversight of the general collections budget. The Associate Dean for Collections provides guidance, support, and coordination for all general and special collections operations in acquisitions, collection development, cataloging and resource description, and preservation. The position plays a lead role in planning and implementing strategies for acquiring and licensing electronic collections and preserving physical collections in line with the library’s strategic plan. The Associate Dean for Collections coordinates assessment and analysis of collections in meeting goals of the library and university.

The Associate Dean for Collections collaborates with department liaisons and special collections outreach librarians to ensure coordination and continuity for collections in all disciplines and formats to support university curriculum and research. This position collaborates with Columbia campus branch and special collections librarians to integrate collections assessment strategies across the library system. The Associate Dean for Collections works with liaisons, special collections, the communications department, and others to promote and market collections to the university community. The Associate Dean for Collections supervises a staff of paraprofessionals and tenure-track librarians.
The Associate Dean for Collections leads the University Libraries' participation in the collections initiatives of local, regional, and national consortia including, but not limited to, the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and the Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries (PASCAL).
The Associate Dean for Collections works closely with the Scholarly Communications Team to explore the integration of open access research, teaching, and learning materials into library collections. This position curates open access content to include those items that fit within the libraries’ collection development policy and strategic plan. In collaboration with the Scholarly Communications Team, the Associate Dean for Collections is responsible for the promotion of open access materials.
The Associate Dean for Collections actively participates in the intellectual life and administrative activities of the library and the university, and maintains a record of professional contributions. The Associate Dean for Collections mentors and encourages professional development among department staff and faculty, and fosters a spirit of collaboration in a positive, productive environment.
Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, 12-month, unclassified, tenure-track, faculty status position with the rank of Librarian. Benefits include medical, dental, state retirement or optional retirement plan.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:
- Evidence of leadership in collections development and collections assessment in an academic research library.
- Demonstrated understanding and experience with the electronic resources life cycle.
- Demonstrated experience with local, regional, and national consortia.
- Demonstrated experience managing and monitoring the allocation of funds in an academic research library.
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent degree and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience.
Desired Qualifications:
- Understanding of the issues related to the acquisition, processing, and promotion of special collections.
- Demonstrated experience incorporating open access resources into library collections.
- Demonstrated experience with outreach and promotion of collections in an academic library.
